A Connection Beyond Nature:

Discovering Paso del Mango in Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta

Santa Marta is the perfect place to find a connection with what truly matters. Here, nature expresses itself in its wildest form – the simplest yet most complex expression of life itself. It’s a tapestry of experiences, sensations, ancestral knowledge, beauty, truth, and goodness in their purest expression.

One of my favorite destinations in Santa Marta that fills me with life is Paso del Mango Bonda, located in the Sierra Nevada. This is a place to remember our origins and connect with something greater and superior to ourselves.

Getting to Paso del Mango

There are several ways to access this wonderful place:

By Bus: Take any bus marked “Bonda” from various parts of the city. The bus fare is 2,700 Colombian pesos. Ask the driver to drop you off at the police station in Bonda, where you’ll find the trail that begins your approximately 2-hour hike.

In my opinion, walking these two hours allows you to prepare yourself to experience the energy of this place with greater openness. From the very beginning of the journey, you can meditate and listen to nature as it welcomes you with a preview of the sights, sounds, and aromas that will give you invaluable insight into this magnificent destination.

By Motorcycle: If the walk seems too long, you can take a motorcycle taxi. Some friendly local riders can take you for 30,000 pesos directly to Paso del Mango or to nearby attractions like Reserva Natural Caoba or La Finca de Chocolate – two beautiful places that will give you the best possible experience of the area.

Must-Visit Destinations

Reserva Natural Caoba

This magical place boasts incredible biodiversity, carefully protected by a couple of biologists who have cultivated much more than just a wonderful home. I love having lunch here after the hike – just remember to make your reservation early in the morning. The meal is prepared with all the warmth of home cooking.

You can also stay overnight in the reserve’s marvelous rooms nestled among the trees, where the nearby river speaks to you and the animals tell stories spanning millions of years.

La Finca de Chocolate

Right next door, you’ll find the Chocolate Farm, where you can learn about the entire cacao process – from the initial flower stage to becoming the delicacy that delights millions of people worldwide.

Hidden Waterfalls

Around these locations, you’ll discover several waterfalls that are also worth visiting, located approximately one hour’s walk from the natural reserve.
